Based on data provided by SIBS Analytics, consumption in Portugal during the summer period, between July and August 2025, grew by 9% in the number of transactions and 4% in value (withdrawals and purchases) compared to the same period last year. The average value per transaction was €38, which is €2 less than the average for 2024.
During this period, one in every six transactions was made with foreign cards. The data reveals that the sectors with the highest growth compared to the same period last year were Leisure, which grew 15% in the number of transactions and 1% in value, and Restaurants, which saw an 11% increase in the number of transactions and a 12% increase in their value.
Foreign card consumption in Portugal increased by 11% in the number of transactions and 4% in value compared to 2024. The average value per foreign card transaction was €41, a reduction of €3 compared to the same period last year. The top 5 foreign countries with the highest consumption in Portugal were France (20%), the United Kingdom (14%), Spain (12%), the United States of America (7%), and Germany (7%).
Regarding the Portuguese on holiday in Portugal and abroad, there was a 9% increase in the number of transactions and a 7% increase in the value of consumption compared to the same period last year, with an average value per transaction of €39 (down €1 compared to last year).
The districts of Faro and Lisbon were the preferred destinations for the Portuguese, each accounting for 12% of the total operations with national cards made more than 50 km from the place of origin. However, the share of Faro decreased by 7% compared to the same period last year, while Lisbon saw a growth of 1%.
In addition to Faro and Lisbon, SIBS Analytics data also reveals that the Portuguese are starting to choose other destinations for their summer holidays. Spain, which ranks third, is the destination with the highest variation in the number of transactions (4%). Porto saw a 7% increase, which is 3% more than last year.
Regarding the share of transactions in total Portuguese consumption abroad, by number, it was concentrated in Spain (43%), France (16%), Italy (7%), Ireland (5%), and Belgium (4%).
