SIBS celebrates the 10th anniversary of MB WAY, a platform that has been a true driving force in transforming how the Portuguese interact with their money, offering solutions that combine convenience, security, and sustainability. To date, MB WAY has over 6.5 million users.
On October 12th, we celebrate a decade of consolidation of one of the most complete and widely used digital solutions in Portugal, which goes far beyond transfers. MB WAY is now a digital services ecosystem that simplifies users’ daily lives, allowing them to pay for purchases, withdraw money, manage cards, make payments on public transport, and support charitable causes—all through their mobile phones.
Over the years, SIBS has continuously innovated and worked to offer an expanded range of services integrated into a single app, as well as through integrations with the apps of participating banks, providing practical tools for both consumers and merchants.
Currently, it is possible to make payments using only a QR Code or Contactless, withdraw money from a MULTIBANCO ATM without a physical card, create virtual cards (MB NET) for online purchases, manage subscriptions and recurring payments, split bills, and make money requests.
MB WAY has also introduced new ways of usage with the launch of MB WAY pulse, which enables payments through devices and wearables like bracelets, keychains, or watch clips, further promoting convenience in daily life.
Also noteworthy is MB WAY UP!, the MB WAY loyalty program aimed at valuing and rewarding users through cashback campaigns, challenges, loyalty cards, and other prizes whenever they make purchases on the MB WAY app or payments via MB WAY through the bank’s app. On the other hand, with Ser Solidário MB WAY, solidarity institutions receive donations directly through the app in a simple and cost-free manner.
MB WAY has also been incorporating measures that reduce the environmental impact associated with payments. MB WAY eco replaces printed receipts with digital ones, allowing users to view their purchases, activate the controlled sharing of their taxpayer number and email for invoicing, and significantly reducing paper consumption at payment terminals.
For merchants, MB WAY can be integrated into online stores through SIBS’s payment solutions for businesses, making it a practical and secure option for receiving digital payments.
MB WAY is also a key element for the sovereignty and integration of payment methods in Europe, as SIBS leads the EuroPA consortium (European Payments Alliance), in partnership with Bizum (Spain) and Bancomat (Italy). This project aims to contribute to the development of a pan-European sovereign and robust payments market through interoperability between existing payment solutions, supported by SEPA Instant standards and the most widely adopted mobile payment solutions in several European countries.
